Holiday season is suspender season for Southfield company

Sal Herman never has to adjust his belt -- not even after a big holiday meal. Why? Because Herman, who is 66 and lives in Bloomfield Hills, and wears suspenders not restrictive belts. He wears them every day and has done so for years because, as his wife and business partner, Judee Herman, points out, his body is shaped like a carrot -- broad on top and quite tapered toward the bottom. Which means he doesn't have the hips or rear end to keep up his belt. And once his belt goes, so do his pants. Additionally, Sal Herman says he feels taller in suspenders. "A belt kind of cuts you off," he said. "When you take the belt off, you immediately look taller. Clothes fit better and they hang just right."

Also, he believes suspenders are beneficial to his health. A belt will squash a wearer's internal organs, he said, adding that he has no significant medical training. "It's not rocket science. Everybody knows that!"  So intense is Herman's devotion to suspenders -- and the 1% of the population he says wears suspenders -- that he has turned them into an unlikely and thriving business. About 2,400 stores nationwide sell his Holdup brand suspenders. And he's expecting a record-breaking 2012 season on his company's website. The holiday season, it turns out, is also suspender gifting season. Among the current hot sellers from Herman's Southfield-based Hold-Up Suspender Co are Red suspenders.

"I don't know if it's a red thing for the holiday or if people have a Santa Claus costume and they need red suspenders," said Herman, who is known by some as the Suspender King. "They just buy them to hold their pants up."

How they got started .. Herman's rise as suspender supplier to men in Santa suits was a long time coming for the Israeli immigrant. He was trying to make ends meet, working as a auto model and pattern maker for an automotive parts company in 1973, when he decided he had to do something about the cheaply made clip-on suspenders he wore on the job.

"Every time I would bend over, the clip in the back -- that's where it pulls, always one of the back clips -- would slip off and hit me in the back of the head," Herman said. So he set up a makeshift shop in the garage -- or maybe it was on the kitchen table, neither Sal nor Judee Herman can recall.

"We didn't have any tools," said Judee Herman, who like husband Sal is 66. "We didn't have two nickels to rub together. ... He bought one of these big magnifying glasses that you clamp onto a table." And within a couple weeks, Sal Herman had solved his suspender clip popping off problem. He'd invented a new suspender clip, one with a pin in its middle that pierces the fabric, making it virtually impossible for it to slip off his pants -- even when he's got pockets filled with a phone, coins, tools and a wallet. He even has a new Patent for the composite plastic Gripper Clasp that hold tighter... the harder you pull on them.

Herman was thrilled with his clip invention and he made some home made suspenders for his brothers-in-law, who were enthusiastic as well. And while they all walked around with their heads held high, just like their pants, that was as far as Sal Herman's no-slip suspender clip went -- until 1988.

"With a lot of gumption and work, you can make it in this country," Sal Herman said. "I could not afford college. People, they don't have that money, especially today, college is 10 times more than 50 years ago. It doesn't mean you give up and die and roll over."

Finally having money to invest, the couple decided to take a gamble. They paid for a patent search to see whether anyone had made a similar suspender clip. When that search turned up nothing, they applied for a patent. Two years later, they received one -- the first suspender clip patent in more than 100 years.

"We can't really believe ... that we were able to get a patent on suspenders," said Judee Herman. "They've been around for a long time."

The Hermans' plan to sell the patent proved difficult. "Nobody felt there was a need for this product, for a clip that doesn't slip," said Sal Herman. "People, I don't know if they never complained to store owners about their suspenders slipping. I contacted the manufacturers that made suspenders," he said. "It was a good product. I knew it worked so well. Those people I tried to approach to sell it, maybe they didn't understand there was a market for this product."

Ideas keep coming to the rescue in Detroit and by 1996, the Hermans' Holdup Suspender Company was up and running and selling suspenders, mostly through advertisements. They opened an Internet store in 1997 at www.mysuspenders.com and by 1998, they had moved into the suspender wholesale business. The company, which Sal Herman expects to bring in about $2 million this year, stocks suspenders in more than 250 styles and colors, though basic black, brown and blue are the most popular.

"The people who wear his suspenders aren't wearing them to be fashionable", he said. Although he has designer patterns, stripes, silks and even leather braided styles to choose from...

"Listen Sister, I sell a pair a day," said Mindy Gustin, a sales associate at Stallone's, a men's store in Anchorage, Alaska, which, according to Herman's records, sells more suspenders than most of the hardware, sporting goods and clothing stores that stock them."I think a lot of it has to do with our utilitarian perspective, living in Alaska," Gustin said. "We are not a fashion forward kind of state. Most of our guys wear flannels and jeans."

Herman's ideas keep coming.... He has developed suspenders for skiers to wear over their ski pants, suspender boot straps to keep motorcycle riders' pant legs from creeping up in the wind, suspenders designed to be worn under clothing next to the skin called Under-Ups. ("There are a lot of men you wouldn't know are wearing suspenders because they're wearing our hidden undergarment suspenders," said Judee Herman.) We even make USA made Maternity suspenders. And suspender-friendly jeans -- jeans that don't have belt loops -- although those are being phased out because of sizing issues.

Now, if history holds true, sales at the Hold-Up website, www.mysuspenders.com, will be busy this weekend. From Black Friday to Cyber Monday last year, the website averaged more than 300 sales a day -- up from an average of about 40-50 a day. All because Sal Herman couldn't keep up his pants.
